Harry Mackin 2008

Dear fellow citizens of Josephine County:

Thank you for visiting my website and for your interest in the future of Josephine County government. This is a critical time in our community. We have experienced significant growth in population and with that growth, comes the inevitable need for more services. County government provides many services which most of us take for granted yet must be funded. If we dial 911 in an emergency, we expect a response from police or fireman. When we drive our vehicles, we expect our roads to be maintained and laws to be enforced. We expect our public lands including parks to be well managed. We expect criminals to be jailed and prosecuted according to law. We want a place for juvenile problems to be adequately handled. We expect to be served in an efficient, friendly, and timely manner when dealing with the County Clerk, Assessor, or Planning Dept. We expect to have an open, functioning library. These are expectations shared by communities all across this nation. Why are we different?

The basic services provided by Josephine County have been paid by timber receipts and payments from the federal government. Timber is no longer being harvested in any significant quantity and the federal government has terminated their payments. We, as a community, must now decide the “quality of life” we wish to maintain. We must elect leaders that we have confidence in and give them the support and the funding they need to carry out their duties. We must let them know our needs and expectations. Successful communities are characterized by citizens, businesses, and government working together in partnership for the benefit of all. We have many examples of successful partnerships here in our county and we must continue to work together as we address our critical financial shortfalls.

I am running for the office of County Commissioner because I feel that in the 30 years I have lived, worked, and contributed to this community, I have gained the knowledge and experience to be part of the ‘team” to lead this community to a brighter future. I ask for your support and your vote on May 20th.
